Our journey
At OQI, we have a growing community of over 500 individuals, all working towards contributing to co-shaping the future of quantum computing and its impact. Read more about what we have been working on in our latest progress report!
Pilot Phase
OQI was officially launched in March 2024 for an initial pilot phase of three years, hosted at CERN. Now over halfway through the pilot phase, our global community continues to grow and keep momentum in advancing OQI’s mission.
Incubation Phase
The OQI incubation involved prototyping OQI’s activities, and bringing our ‘4As’ to life. The funding and sustainable governance of OQI were also confirmed, paving the way to its official launch in 2024.
Incubation Advisory Board
During the incubation phase, the OQI incubation Advisory Board was created, providing advice and guidance from leading research, diplomacy, industry and impact experts. The incubation Advisory Board led to the formation of the official OQI Advisory Committee, formed during its pilot phase in 2024.
Public Announcement
The proposal for OQI was announced at the 2022 GESDA Summit, with significant traction in the quantum community and with diplomatic stakeholders.
Design Phase
Out of 42 emerging scientific topics explored by GESDA, quantum computing stood out as a technology with transformative potential, requiring science diplomacy and international collaboration to ensure its benefits are shared globally and its risks are carefully managed. A task force of scientists, diplomats, industry leaders and philanthropists was created, with the mission to find a way to maximise the positive impact of quantum computing for everyone. From this collaboration, the idea for OQI was born.
